Steve Button, now a professional saxophone
tutor, was a student of Ronnie Ross from 1981.
Having had just one lesson, Steve became ill
with Hodgkins Disease. During his illness
Steve received much valued support from both
Ronnie and his wife and to this day treasures
a letter from his tutor sentto him in hospital
in January 1982.
Once recovered from his illness, Steve resumed
his lessons. A lasting memory of this time
for Steve is one occasion, fortunately a
balmy summers day, when he arrived outside
Ronnie's address in southwest London to hear
his tutor practicing on the alto clarinet.
Even though Ronnie was only playing exercises,
Steve was so impressed by the beauty of the
sound and exquisite execution that he
continued standing outside for ten minutes,
just listening. When he did finally ring the
doorbell and was admitted, Steve mentioned
howlong he had been outside. Ronnie passed
over the implied praise, simply saying he
should have rung the bell sooner.
