I wrote to David O’Rourke asking him if he was the guitarist on

the 1988 session at the Cannonball Club in Birmingham

(see Jazz Discography ref  88/3) and here are his replies:-

“Hi Rodney,
No it definitely wasn't me on that session. I think we were to record

with him at some point and it later fell through. A Cork alto player

put the gig together, his name is Len McCarthy, the bassist was

Dave Fleming and again, working on memory, I think the drummer

was Pete Ainscough (Pete passed away last October). I remember

this engagement very well as Ronnie was my first gig with a 'name'

musician and I was understandably very nervous - not for long, his

gentle nature put me at ease quickly. I also remember Dave Fleming

remarking that Ronnie said that he could get much more out of me

and consequently he drew me out of shyness/nervousness etc. I have

nothing but the fondest of memories of working with him.
Come to think of it, I wish it was me on the session you are referring

 to :) but unfortunately not.
Take care,
David”

“Hi Rodney,
By all means go ahead and put the email on the website. I also remember

that we did record that weekend with the intentions of it being released

but Len was unhappy with the session and therefore it was never released.

I think the recording took place at RTE's studio but can't remember for sure.

At the time I was crushed as I was only beginning to make my way through

the ranks and had enjoyed working with Ronnie so much. Some tapes exist

and I used to have them but not sure where they are now. Even all these

years later, it is my memory of his kind, encouragement that came from his

own humility that stays with me when I think of this great musician.
David.”
