from the great jazz drummer and band leader who worked
extensively with Ronnie Ross. The letter was written
on August 18 2004. Many thanks to Allan for the letter
and his greatly valued support.

For over 4 decades he has been one of UK's busiest drummers.
After playing in Jack Parnell's band and the John Dankworth
Orchestra in the 1950's, he has performed or recorded with
many of the world's leading jazz artists including Ronnie Scott,
Tubby Hayes, Jim Hall, Al Haig, Stan Getz, Dizzie Gillespie,
Bob Brookmeyer, Albert Manglsdorff, Stephane Grappelli,
Peggy Lee and Blossom Dearie. In 1970 he studied composition
and arranging at Berklee School of Music in Boston.
He has composed, arranged and conducted for the BBC
Radio Big Band, the Dankworth Generation Band and for
singers Marion Montgomery, Carol Kidd, Elaine Delmar
and Georgie Fame. Arrangements for Ken Peplowski,
Warren Vache and Mark Nightingale. Has led a big band over
the past few years and has made hundreds of recordings,
movie sound tracks, commercial jingles, television and radio
broadcasts as well as performances in clubs and concert
halls throughout the world. In recent years he has been
working and/or recording with Scott Hamilton,
Cleo Laine/John Dankworth, Carol Kidd, George Shearing,
Ruby Braff, Kenny Davern. Has won the British Jazz Award
for drums seven times. 1994 Allan won BBC Radio 2 award
and in 1998 the British Jazz Awards for Arranger/Composer.
